Dr. Stuart Gottesfeld

Dr. Stuart Gottesfeld, a respected gynecologist and obstetrician in private practice for almost 40 years and past president of the OB-GYN medical staff at Rose Hospital, passed away June 14, 2020, in Denver. He was 85. Rabbi Yaakov Chaitovsky officiated at the private June 16 service at Fairmount. Feldman Mortuary made the arrangements.

“Known for delivering thousands of babies as well as being an excellent surgeon and teacher, he was a committed husband, devoted father and grandfather,” his loved ones said.

Chris Leppek, IJN assistant editor, credits Dr. Gottesfeld with providing invaluable medical assistance more than 30 years ago that enabled him and his wife Lisa Leppek to have two sons, Noah and Adam.

“Not only was Dr. Gottesfeld an amazing physician and surgeon,” Leppek said, “but a compassionate and understanding mensch whose calm bedside manner and sense of humor were very helpful to patients in stressful situations.

“We will always be grateful to him.”

Dr. Gottesfeld was born in Denver, graduated East High School, went to Amherst College and earned his MD from CU.

After his residency at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York, he served as a physician in the US Army for two years before returning to Denver.

Dr. Gottesfeld established a private practice associated with Rose Hospital that eventually included his two younger brothers and oldest son.

He was on the boards of the Colorado State Board of Medical Examiners and the Colorado Health Foundation among others, and president and vice chair of Rose Hospital’s department of OB-GYN.

Dr. Gottesfeld, who retired from clinical practice after nearly four decades, continued advocating for women’s health and teaching CU residents until earlier this year.

He volunteered as a science teacher and an administrator at Keshet of the Rockies.

Dr. Gottesfeld is survived by his wife of 58 years Marilyn Gottesfeld; sons Marshall (Joyce), Stephen (Karen) and Jon (Linda) Gottesfeld; grandchildren Julia, Max, Laura, Ben, Eli, Sam, Oliver, Sarah and Mae; sister Phyllis Gottesfeld Knight and brother Ray Gottesfeld.

He was preceded in death by his brother Dr. Kenneth Gottesfeld.
