Dr. Nathan Hoffman

Nathan Hoffman passed away on May 10, 2008, in New York. He was 75.

Services were held on May 11 in Jerusalem.

Born in 1933 in Denver, Dr. Hoffman attended East High School. He spent much of his later life working in Los Angeles and Israel.

He was married to Sara Hoffman for 50 years. She died in January 2008.

Dr. Hoffman attended the Colorado School of Mines where he received his undergraduate degree in metallurgical engineering. He also attended the Technion: the Israel Institute of Technology, where he received his masters in physics, and later returned there to get a PhD in liquid metals. He won a North American Rockwell half-salary scholarship.

Over his career Dr. Hoffman worked for Rocketdyne, Rockwell’s Liquid Metal Engineering Center, the Energy Technology Engineering Center and taught at Ben Gurion University in Beersheva, Israel.

Dr. Hoffman helped build rockets, high stream jets, worked with JPL, Lawrence Livermore and NASA, investigated the phenomenon of cold fusion and was the head engineer on several projects concerning liquid metals.

He won the Rockwell Engineer of the Year award, the distinguished alumni achievement award at Colorado School of Mines and is the author or editor of two technical books and numerous technical papers.

Dr. Hoffman is survived by his brother Irwin Hoffman of Denver; three children Zippi, Rabbi Jordan Hoffman and Aravah Hoffman; and 17 grandchildren.
