Dr. Mickey Mandel, a dermato-pathology specialist in Denver, passed away Feb. 11, 2019, in Denver, surrounded by his family and caregivers. Rabbis Bruce Dollin and Yaakov Chaitovsky and Cantor Martin Goldstein officiated at the Feb. 14 service at the HEA.

Interment followed at Mt. Nebo Cemetery. Feldman Mortuary made the arrangements.

“Mickey will be remembered for his intense kindness and caring nature — always quick to offer a hug and a kiss, and another,” the family said. “He had a gift for making everybody feel welcomed and loved.”

Dr. Mandel was born Dec. 21, 1940, in Denver to Oscar and Minnie Mandel.

He attended North High School, where he met the love of his life Donna Smith as a teen. But Donna had to make the first move by asking a friend to set them up.

Upon hearing that Donna was the interested party, he responded in a heartbeat that lasted 57 years.

Dr. Mandel attended the CU School of Medicine, did his residency in San Francisco and passed his boards in pediatrics, dermatology and dermato-pathology.

He was then stationed at Ft. Bragg, NC, and retired from the US Army with the rank of major.

Dr. Mandel practiced at The Denver Skin Clinic under the tutelage of his mentor, Dr. Henry Lewis.

An active member of the HEA, he co-chaired fundraising efforts for the new building from 1995-1996 and was president of the congregation, 1998-1999.

The family wishes to thank his devoted caregivers Sheila, Meg, Anne Marie, Shane, Connor, Angela, Toni, Renee and the rest of the crew at Balfour.

Mr. Mandel is survived by his wife Donna Mandel; daughters Pam Mandel, Amy Springer (Jeff and mother Sylvia Springer) and Heidi (Mike) O’Neil; eight grandchildren, Molly and Joe Spaniac, Jackson, Harrison and Samantha Springer, Cydne (Jeff) Newbrough, Rylie and Connor O’Neil; and great-grandchildren Ford and Violet Newbrough.

Contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Assn., 455 Sherman St., Denver, CO 80203; BMH-BJ or the HEA.
