Doris Marie Arent Schwartzberg, 86, active in numerous Jewish and civic causes and one of the founding members of Temple Sinai, passed away on March 6, 2021, in Denver. Rabbi Rick Rheins officiated at the March 8 graveside service at Golden Hill Cemetery. Feldman Mortuary made the arrangements.
Mrs. Schwartzberg was born in Denver to Maurice and Sylvia Arent in 1934. Just 18 months old when her father died, she was raised by her aunt and uncle Esther and Charlie Winocur and her bubbe Bella Arent.
She attended DPS, Colorado A&M and Metropolitan State College, where she received her bachelor’s degree.
In high school, she met Fred Schwartzberg, a student at the School of Mines, on a double date. They dated for two years and married in May, 1954, in New York City.
The Schwartzbergs first resided in Connecticut and then Columbus, Ohio, before returning to Denver. Along the way they had children Merle, Beth and John.
Mrs. Schwartzberg shared her love of art, opera, classical music and traveling in the Rockies and around the world with her husband.
A vital member of Temple Sinai since its founding in 1967, Mrs. Schwartzberg taught religious school at the congregation during its infancy.
She also volunteered for the Democratic Party, the American Medical Center, the American Jewish Committee, and was a docent at the Colorado History Museum.
The Schwartzbergs have been regular members of Temple Sinai’s Torah study class led by Rabbis Ray Zwerin and Steve Kaye for many years.
Mrs. Schwartzberg is survived by her husband Fred; children Merle (David) Ziman, Beth (Mark) Redmiles and John (Patti) Schwartzberg; grandchildren Charlie Ziman, Frankie (Yael) Ziman, Elissa (Josh Rosenbaum) Redmiles, Rebecca Schwartzberg and Jacob Schwartzberg; great-granddaughter Mia Ziman; and sister Rita Frischer.
