, I have recently spent a lot of time in and around three hospitals and other health facilities in New York and Colorado, not as a patient, but as a patient’s advocate or visitor. I witnessed a lot of excellent medical care and compassionate nursing. Iam grateful. However, I also was taken aback to see that the welfare of the patient is not always the goal any more. Legal and “ethical” considerations interfere. No one today would argue for dispensing with seat belts. Yet, if a seat belt is part of a wheelchair to prevent an ill person from falling out and injuring himself, that becomes a very different story in Colorado.
