Devera Thorn

Devera Mellman Thorn, a native Denverite and lifelong resident, passed away peacefully on June 4, 2016, in Denver. She was 82. Rabbi Richard Rheins officiated at the June 7 service at Temple Sinai. A private family service was held June 10. Feldman Mortuary made the arrangements.

“A wonderful homemaker, wife, mother and grandmother who took great pride in creating beauty in her home, she fought valiantly against the increasing challenges of Parkinson’s disease for 26 years,” the family said.

Mrs. Thorn was born Oct. 11, 1933, in Denver to Isaac and Estelle Mellman.

A graduate of East High School, she met her future husband Bernard H. Thorn when she was 17 and he was a 20-year-old stationed at Lowry Air Force Base.

She attended CU for one year before marrying Bernard, and completed her major in elementary education at DU.

Mrs. Thorn taught sewing at the Emily Griffith Opportunity School and formed her own company, Devera Designs, making and selling gift items.

She and Bernard traveled all over the world, including cities in Europe, Africa, South America and the Middle and Far East.

Mrs. Thorn is survived by her husband of 63 years Bernard Thorn; daughters Nancy Thorn and Patti (Harold Dubinski) Thorn; grandchildren Erin and Sam Dubinski; and brother Gerald Mellman.

She was predeceased by her daughter Vicki Thorn.
