Global cinema at Denver’s Jewish Film Festival

Yesterday marked opening night for MACC’s Annual Jewish Film Festival, which brings to Denver an eclectic mix of Jewish film from across the globe. Most of the films on offer won’t ever get a wide cinematic release, so take advantage of this unique opportunity! Visit our Community Calendar for all screening times and short film descriptions.

Here are some of our recommendations from this year’s line-up:

Selected as the feature for the film festival’s Teen Event, Dolphin Boy documents an Arab Israeli teen’s recovery after a brutal kidnapping. Suffering from extreme post traumatic stress disorder, Morad only begins to heal after he starts interacting with dolphins.

We all know about the impact Winston Churchill had on the outcome of World War II, but what about the early years of the war, when those surrounding him failed to heed his warnings? Ben Kingsley’s superb narration in Walking with Destiny will take you along Churchill’s journey and illustrate the courageous leader’s enduring legacy.

Playing in 1938 Vienna, My Best Enemy (orig. Mein bester Freund) is an Austrian film about the friendship between Viktor, son of a wealthy Jewish gallery and working-class Rudi. Their friendship turns when Rudi joins the Nazi Party; the film, however, stays far away from the usual roles of victim and perpetrator resulting in a unique – and even sometimes humorous – telling of a familiar story.
