David Daves

David S. Daves, principal of the Emily Griffith High School, teacher, traveler and collector of tall tales, passed away Jan. 13, 2021, in Denver. The family held a private memorial service at their home. Feldman Mortuary made the arrangements.

“An accomplished educator, David would always say that his proudest role was being father to his girls,” the family said.

Mr. Daves was born Dec. 9, 1966, in Denver to Dr. Marvin Daves and Christine Crooks Daves.

He graduated Manual High School, earned his BA at Washington and Lee University in Virginia and an MA in education at DU.

Mr. Daves lived and traveled extensively across Europe. “David collected adventures and tall tales, the tallest of which happened in Greece, Italy and Spain,” the family said.

He taught English language and literature at a private school in Spain, returned to the US and became dean and instructor of photography at South High School, where he also coached the golf team.

After serving as director of DPS’ Newcomer Program, Mr. Daves became principal of Emily Griffith in 2012.

Mr. Daves married Lola Moreno of Spain and they had two daughters, Andrea and Elena. The couple divorced in 2013 but continued co-parenting their children.

He married Jackie Coppola in 2013.

Mr. Daves was an accomplished photographer, golfer and skier.

David Daves is survived by his wife Jackie Coppola; daughters Andrea and Elena Daves; and sisters Elizabeth Daves and Beebe (John) Mesch.
