Daniel Nidess, a Denver native, passed away Nov. 18, 2010, in New York. He was 90.
Mr. Nidess was born Dec. 8, 1919, in Denver. The editor of Manual High Schools newspaper, he won the citywide Kiwanis Oratorical Contest for High Schools in 1937, the year he graduated.
He studied journalism at CU from 1937-1939 and edited CUs literary magazine. He also wrote a one-act play entitled My Chosen People.
The Record Stockman News Co. hired him as a daily radio announcer when he was a student at DU. Mr. Nidess also edited the Pan-American News.
Mr. Nidess, who volunteered for the US Army in 1941, served as a company clerk in Company C 19th Combat Engineers in Algeria, Tunisia, Sicily and Italy.
A contributor to Stars and Stripes, he was publication director and editor of the Regimental Diary and monthly News Bulletin.
After his discharge in 1945, Mr. Nidess returned to DU and graduated Phi Beta Kappa in 1947.
He married Lois Shumway in 1947. They were married for 34 years, until she passed away in 1981.
Mr. Nidess founded Specialty Foods Corp. in 1956 and then started Nutri-Books, Inc. He retired at age 73.
Mr. Nidess married Dorothy Katz in 1983. She passed away in 2003.
A founder and member of the relocated Beth Joseph for 33 years, he belonged to Bnai Brith, the Allied Jewish Campaign, JNF, Democratic Party, ACLU, Southern Poverty Law Center and NAACP.
Mr. Nidess is survived by his son Dr. Rael Nidess and daughter Tanya Nidess; grandchildren Capt. Daniel W. Nidess, USMC, Andrea Nidess, Patricia (Culley) Rausch; and great-grandchildren Calvin, Lillian and Piper Loise.
