Colorado Day, 2013

Next Thursday, August 1 is Colorado Day, marking 137 years since the Territory of Colorado became the 38th state to join the ranks of the United States of America. It is a day that we celebrate Colorado for all its natural beauty, pioneer spirit and political quirkiness.

We celebrate a state that is “solidly purple” when in comes to politics, and whose “purple mountains majesty” served as Katherine Lee Bates’ inspiration for “America the Beautiful.”

As our state turns 137, some northern counties are making noise about secession because they feel their voices aren’t being heard in the Statehouse. Their dissent should be a wake-up call for the legislature to serve all of Colorado, from the purple mountains to the fruited plains.
