Cogie Elzea

Cogie Elzea

Cogie Ann (Peugh) Elzea, a devoted mother, wife, school secretary and an accomplished golfer, passed away Nov. 1, 2020, after living with Alzheimer’s for many years. Due to COVID-19, the family will hold a gathering celebrating her life at a later date.

“Cogie was a very hands-on-mom,” her loved ones said. “She coached girls’ soccer, was a Girl Scout leader, belonged to the youth football auxiliary and was a swim team volunteer.

“She never missed a game, a match or a meet.”

Cogie Peugh was born Aug. 21, 1937, in Mankato, Kan., where she was raised and graduated high school.

After briefly attending Kansas State University, she moved to Denver in 1956.

She accepted a job at GE Financial Services, where she met John Elzea.

The couple married in 1957 and were together for 59 years.

Mrs. Elzea returned to the workforce in the 1970s as an elementary school secretary in Adams County’s School District 12. She helped open several new elementary schools in subsequent years.

“She loved her job but more than that, she simply loved the kids,” her family said.

Mrs. Elzea retired in 1994 to spend more time with her husband, play golf and travel.

Mr. Elzea passed away in February, 2016.

A champion golfer, Mrs. Elzea played on the women’s senior circuit and won many awards.

She loved her longtime friends, hiking, camping, dogs, fishing, playing bridge, convertibles, gardening, flowers and the mountains.

“In the last few years, Cogie enjoyed going on scenic drives and would often proclaim with joy, ‘We live in a beautiful place!’” her family said.

“There will never be another Cogie, who was as unique as her name. She was loved by many, and will be missed.”

Cogie Elzea is survived by her daughter Barbara (Mark) Goldstein and sons John A. and Jeff (Doreen) Elzea; grandchildren Jessica (Tom) Greco, Nick (Sarah) Elzea, Ben (Amber) Elzea, John J. Elzea, Allissa, Justin and Nathan Goldstein; five great-grandchildren; and sister Sara Jane (Randy) Jensen.

Contributions may be made in her name to Max Fund, 720 W. 10th Ave., Denver, 80204; or charity of choice.
