Checked-out

Many people would agree that the best thing about vacation is that for a period of time one can “check out.” For someone working in the news business it’s crucial, since in our daily lives there’s no break from current events.

Here’s what I missed while I was away: failure on the part of US Congress to reach agreement on a new health insurance bill; tensions on the Temple Mount leading to security measures and dead Israelis and their Palestinian murderers; a horrifying retribution terror attack in the West Bank that left three family members dead; the very strange story about whether Linda Sarsour did or did not promise funds to Golden Hill cemetery; the magnificent actor Martin Landau dying — and probably a few others I doneven know about.

Of course, in this day and age, I don’t fully check out. I do review my email daily and respond to urgent items. I also sort through my inbox — otherwise woe betide me if I leave it all to my first day back in the office! But I glance, leaving aside anything that can wait.

While I missed local and world events, here’s what I didn’t miss: stunning Colorado wildflowers in full bloom on Pass Creek Trail near Silverton; a bald eagle perched in a tree on the steep walls of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison; bountiful produce at Ridgway’s farmers market; riding and surviving the sometimes terrifying Million Dollar Highway.

Welcome to Colorful Colorado!
