Carol Joyce Lifsey of Philadelphia passed away June 23, 2011 in Woodloch Pines, Pa., in the Pocono Mountains. A frequent visitor to Denver, Mrs. Lifsey was the mother of Denverite Dr. Evelyn Lifsey Male.
The family said that Mrs. Lifsey passed away on the last night of a family reunion, surrounded by her husband, children, grandchildren, brothers, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.
A funeral service was held June 26 in Philadelphia with interment at Beth David Cemetery in Elmont, NY.
Carol Goldman was born May 9, 1933, in Brooklyn, where she attended Erasmus High School and Brooklyn College.
She married Jeremy A. Lifsey on July 4, 1953, and lived in Philadelphia most of her married life.
Mrs. Lifsey started her career as a teacher and became a full-time homemaker when her four children were born. She gradually re-entered the workforce, first as a substitute teacher.
After earning her masters degree at West Chester State College, Mrs. Lifsey taught in community college. She was hired to teach full time at a high school housed at the Institute of the Pennsylvania Hospital, a private psychiatric hospital.
Interested in both photography and family therapy, she taught photography and later become a therapist. In her 60s and 70s, she provided social work support for caregivers of the elderly in northern Virginia.
Active in ORT in her younger years, she volunteered at the local library and the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts after retiring.
Mrs. Lifsey is survived by her husband Jeremy; four children Laura Lifsey of Collingswood, NJ, Evelyn Lifsey (Richard) Male of Denver; Susan Lifsey (Marlon) Portes of New York City and Benjamin (Susan) Lifsey of Washington, DC; nine grandchildren, Abraham, Daniel, Sarah and Juliadele Male of Denver, Madeleine Lifsey of New Jersey, Jacob, Ruth and Hannah Portes of New York and Sammy Lifsey of Washington, DC; and brothers Marvin Goldman of Davis, Calif., and Stuart Goldman of Rockville, Md.
The family suggests memorial contributions to the Yiddish Book Center, 1021 West St., Amherst, MA 01002-3375.
