Broncos stadium’s new name

The Broncos’ stadium is no longer Sports Authority Field because Sports Authority is no longer. Naturally, this invites suggestions for a new name, with or without the zillion dollars paid for “naming rights.” Which, somehow, we don’t think will go for a zillion dollars anymore, given the Broncos’ recent, dismal, unthinkable, tatterdemalion seasons. So, how about:

Connie Mack Stadium (the manager who finished last for a few decades with the old Kansas City Athletics). Or, are we being too harsh? So lets try John Elway Stadium (hoping it will bring back the good old glory days). OK, enough delusion, let’s just go with the lugubriously appropriate Flint, Michigan Stadium (yes, we’re that bad!). But if so, then let’s just stick with Mile High Stadium (Mile High, ha ha).

Thus, our tendencies rotate between the current tawdry football reality and the once proud Team That Produced: William Jennings Bryan Stadium (he lost the presidency three times); or, Franklin Delano Roosevelt Stadium (he won the presidency four times); or, Bernard Madoff Field (a strong nod to the current recycling of bad teams); or, Mother Teresa Field (a strong nod to the old Bronco idealism).

Actually, we have a choice more appropriate than any of the above. It, or something like it, was originally suggested when the current stadium was opened in 2001. The name captures an important, inspiring and enduring idea. A name that will not be up for cancellation once every 15 years or so, based on the whims of the marketplace. A name whose significance should not be limited to the aftermath of terrorist attacks or war. A name, whether it be a time of war or peace, expresses our eternal gratitude for and debt to our national military, police, firefighter and survivor heroes, the people who make our country great: American Heroes Stadium.
