Blizzard descends, Mayor Hancock sleeps

Last Tuesday, Denver was a winter wonderland. Swirling flakes, pure white drifts, snow covered branches.

But enough for sentimentality: Such weather is much enjoyed from the inside of a cozy home — not outside by drivers braving the treacherous roads.

The first snowplow spotted by our intrepid staff (no snow day for us!) was around 3 p.m. on 12th Avenue. Capitol Hill was a slip n’ slide, a soup of slush.

Where, oh where, Mr. Mayor, were the plows?

The odd snowplow was spotted on our commutes home, but the roads remained snow-filled, with traffic moving at a snail’s pace. Pena Blvd. crawled at 30 mph. At 9 a.m. on Wednesday morning, Capitol Hill remained almost impassable, especially the side streets — and, most shocking, westbound Eighth Avenue remained unplowed.

Homer Simpson’s Mr. Plow business was much needed, as the city’s fleet seemed to be in slumber.

Take heed, Mr. Mayor. More than one former Denver mayor has paid the political price of not taking this all important issue seriously enough.
