Betty Ney

Betty Ruth (Kaplan) Ney died on February 22, 2022, at the age of 87. No service was planned.

Mrs. Ney was born on September 26, 1934, in Philadelphia, Pa. She was married to Peter Ney in October, 1953; they were married for 68 years until Mr. Ney’s passing in July, 2021. They Ney family hopes to plan a celebration of life ceremony sometime during the summer.

After earning her BA at DU, and her Master’s in special education at the University of Northern Colorado, Mrs. Ney taught Head Start programs, and taught special needs children at the Haven Center. Her love of teaching continued through her retirement, as Mrs. Ney tutored college students at Arapahoe Community College and volunteered to help new immigrants learn English.

Mrs. Ney was also involved in many of the causes of the ‘60s and ‘70s; she brought her children to picket non-unionized lettuce producers, and her kids also helped her collect signatures on a petition to restrict gun ownership.

“She was a caring, inclusive individual within the community and with her family,” her family said.

She was also an avid artist.

“Betty’s compassion for humanity was clearly reflected in her prolific artwork, especially in her sculpture,” her family said. “She captured the toil of the hardworking Portuguese fisherman repairing his nets, the thoughtful reflection of a rabbi, the grace of acrobats and the abstract beauty of the human body.”

Survivors included children; Richard (Pam Muncaster) Ney, Linda (Peter) Saeta and Diane (Dan) Visser; and eight grandchildren.

Contributions may be made to Special Olympics Colorado, the Southern Poverty Law Center or the US Holocaust Museum.
