Bess Hayutin Kaplan

Bess KaplanFuneral services for Bess Hayutin Kaplan, a longtime resident of Denver, where she was a community activist, took place Aug. 8 at BMH-BJ with Rabbi Bruce Dollin and Cantor Joel Lichterman officiating. Interment was at Rose Hill Cemetery.

Feldman Mortuary made the arrangements for Mrs. Kaplan who passed away Aug. 7, 2008.

Mrs. Kaplan was a native of Berznitz, Ukraine, born April 24, 1913, and spent most of her life in Denver. She was educated at Cheltenham Elementary, Lake Junior High and North High School.

Mrs. Kaplan married Sam Hayutin on June 17, 1935 and was preceded by him in death in November, 1965. She married her second husband, Albert Kaplan, on Feb. 19, 1970. He passed away in August, 2001.

A lifelong member of the Hebrew Educational Alliance, Mrs. Kaplan was a member of Hadassah for many years, and served as its president 1955-57 and 1961-62. She was honored with a lifetime of commitment award at this year’s Hadassah gala.

Mrs. Kaplan also served as a volunteer and discussion leader at Beth Israel Hospital and Geriatric Center.

She is survived by her sons Arnold (Phyllis) Hayutin of Denver and Sheldon (Joyce) Hayutin of Reseda, Calif.; stepchildren Marlene (Murray) Altman of New York, Stanley (Sharon) Kaplan of Denver and Sandra (Robert) Michelson of Florida. She was the sister of Baila Averbuch of Southfield, Mich. and Stephen (Celeste) Gorden of Denver

Mrs. Kaplan is also survived by her grandchildren David (Teresa) Hayutin of Centennial, Karen (Charles) Reid of Southlake, Tex., Stephen (Marnie) Hayutin of Cincinnati, Laura (Clifford) Silverman of California, Steven (Lori) Hayutin of California, Robin (Martin) Wanner of New York, Aaron Kaplan of Washington, DC, Roger (Roslyn) Michelson of Massachusetts and Kenneth (Felices) Michelson, also of Massachusetts; 14 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to BMH-BJ or to Hadassah.
