Bertha Spector

Bertha Spector

Bertha Spector, a Denver resident for many years, passed away Aug. 30, 2021.

A remembrance event and celebration of her life is being planned for the near future. Feldman Mortuary is making the arrangements.

A native of Philadelphia, Mrs. Spector was born, the youngest of six children, on Oct. 17, 1917. After her mother passed away when she was two years old, she was raised by an aunt and uncle in Pittsburgh.

Although she earned a scholarship while in high school, she was unable to attend college during the height of the Great Depression. She was eventually hired as a legal secretary and learned her skills while on the job.

At the age of 23, she married Irvin Spector. The couple moved to Denver after their marriage and raised four children here. After traveling to Europe for a year, Mrs. Spector returned to college and eventually earned a BA in English. She was Phi Beta Kappa.

After the death of her husband in the late 1960s, Mrs. Spector became a single parent to her youngest daughter. She continued working in secretarial positions until joining the Peace Corps while in her 60s, spending a year in Tonga teaching English.

While residing in senior housing she was an active volunteer, helping deliver mail to fellow residents and teaching aerobics classes. She developed a special relationship with her friend, Hank Teitelbaum.

According to Mrs. Spector’s family, “Bert will be remembered for her acerbic wit and sense of humor, her ability to adjust to life circumstances and her wide range of friends over her lifetime.”

She is survived by children Robert Spector, Jan Spector, Martin Spector and Laurie Spector; grandchildren David Spector, Katherine Spector and Naomi Spector; and great-grandchildren Andrew Spector and Logan Spector.

Memorial contributions may be made to Shalom Park.
