Bernard Karshmer

Bernard “Bernie” Karshmer, a professor, hospital administrator and former JCC executive director, passed away Feb. 29, 2016, in Denver. Rabbi Richard Rheins officiated at the March 2 service at Temple Sinai. Interment followed at Emanuel Cemetery. Feldman Mortuary made the arrangements.

Mr. Karshmer was born June 14, 1940, in New Brunswick, NJ, and graduated Rutgers Preparatory High School.

He earned a BA in English literature from Columbia in 1963; an MBA in health and business administration from George Washington University Graduate School of Business and International Affairs in 1965; and an associate degree in urban affairs from the National Institute of Public Affairs in 1969.

On Aug. 9, 1964, Mr. Karshmer married Marcia Ann Karshmer.

 Mr. Karshmer was the director of continuing education, Beth Israel Hospital, 1977-1983; director of extramural CME, Rose Medical Center, 1983-1994; conference chair and director of education, RMC and American Educational Institute; part-time instructor in substance abuse, Metropolitan State College; executive director, JCC, 1999-2000; and professor of applied dentistry, CU School of Dental Medicine.

In 1993, he earned a PhD in health and public policy from the CU Graduate School of Public Affairs.

He was the recipient of the Veritas Award, AMC’s Center for Bioethics and Humanities; Gert Litvak Award, Volunteer of the Year, Mizel Museum; Outstanding Performance as a Director, Denver Film Society; honorary life member and professor emeritus, Rocky Mountain Dental Study Club; and the Johnson Award, ZBT, Columbia.

Mr. Karshmer’s community activities included Stories on Stage (board), Denver County Cultural Council, SCFD Funding Allocations (chair) and Mizel Museum and the CELL (board and board chair).

He belonged to the American College of Health Care Executives and the Convention Liaison Council.

Mr. Karshmer is survived by his wife Marcia Karshmer; children Sandra (Eyal) Yaron, Hud (Carol) Karshmer and Beth (Alex) Raizman; and grandchildren Lior, Aviv, Cailey, Owen, Luca and Mischa; all of Denver.
