Barry Stuart Engel, a devoted and loving husband and father, treasured son and brother, passed away July 21 at his Denver home following a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 63. Rabbi Joe Black and Cantor Elizabeth Sacks officiated at the July 25 memorial service at Temple Emanuel. Interment was at Emanuel Cemetery. Feldman Mortuary made the arrangements.

“Despite his pancreatic cancer diagnosis in early 2014, Barry’s signature sense of humor never wavered,” the family said.

“He continued to live life on his own terms: working full time, traveling, collecting sports cars and enjoying time with family and friends.”

Mr. Engel was born June 19, 1954, in Los Angeles, Calif.

He grew up Omaha, Neb., attended Burke High School and later graduated CU in 1976.

Mr. Engel received his law degree from the University of California Hastings College of Law in 1979 and founded his own practice in Denver five years later.

He gained international prominence for pioneering the field of asset protection and integrated estate planning.

A musician and guitar player, Mr. Engel used the moniker “Hound Dog Engel” and spent much of his free time writing and recording original music in his home studio and performing in several classic rock bands in the Denver area.

He adored his Goldendoodle Roscoe.

Mr. Engel is survived by his wife of 38 years Marsha Engel; children Natalie, Andrew and David; mother Eileen Jacobson; brothers Michael (Rachel Joselson) Sellz, Richard (Trude Olson) Engel, Rand Engel and Gregg (Karen) Engel; and many nieces and nephews.

His adopted father Robert Engel, stepmother Renee Engel, stepfather Leonard Jacobson and birth father Norman        Sellz predeceased him.
