At 95, IJN unveils innovations

Miriam GoldbergThe IJN marks its 95th anniversary next week with ijnNewspaperPlus and a 172-page large-size souvenir magazine for all subscribers.

The anniversary magazine honors Miriam H. Goldberg for her 36 years (“double chai”) as editor and publisher of the IJN.

She took over for her husband Max Goldberg upon his passing in 1972.

The IJN has been in the Goldberg family for 65 years, since 1943.

Also included in the anniversary edition is Generations magazine, “Best of the IJN, 2003-2008” and a community scrapbook. (See page 3 of this week’s print edition for a teaser.)

“We have taken the occasion of our major anniversaries to introduce major innovations,” says Miriam Goldberg.

“For example, the annual community directory, published in the fall Rosh Hashanah L’’Chaim®, and L’Chaim itself, were introduced at the time of our 75th anniversary.

“For the 95th anniversary, the IJN is introducing ijnNewspaperPlus.”Miriam Goldberg

Rabbi Hillel Goldberg, executive editor, explains: “Jewish newspapers have always provided the information that the community needed, and that hasn’t changed — only the technology has.

“That is why we are introducing a new product, ijnNewspaperPlus. “In coming years, ijnNewspaperPlus will help people and our community lead better lives through information.”

The primary source of information will remain the IJN’’s range of print vehicles reaching various audiences — the weekly newspaper, the specialized newspaper editions and L’’Chaim and Generations magazines.

ijnNewspaperPlus will help the IJN provide information and services to the community through new technology in many ways:

  • Community dialogue —— a town square giving people an outlet for their personal voice through the new IJN blog, ‘Rocky Mountain Jew,’ on ijn2.wpengine.com, edited by new web editor, Shana R. Goldberg;
  • Connecting business to customers —— advertisements on ijn2.wpengine.com will become available to businesses and organizations that have a frequency advertising contract with the IJN;
  • Current weather —now on ijn2.wpengine.com;
  • Archives —— IJN archives will become accessible on the updated website, ijn2.wpengine.com, for a fee;
  • Directories and Calendars —— the annual community directory is already on ijn2.wpengine.com, as well as local kosher resources and a weekly event calendar. A planned initiative will expand this event calendar, helping readers find and choose things to do.
  • Sabbath candlelighting time —— now on ijn2.wpengine.com.
  • Online newspaper —— an entirely online weekly IJN subscription is now available, making the newspaper instantly available for readers in Israel, other countries and in states distant from Colorado.

Says Goldberg: “All of these newspaper, magazine and ijnNewspaperPlus products will help the IJN remain the ‘one-stop answer place’ for the Jewish communities burgeoning in Colorado and the intermountain region.”
