Anne Newman

Anne NewmanAnne Newman of Peoria, Ariz., formerly of Denver, passed away Nov. 6, 2015, in Arizona. She was 98. Rabbi Micah Caplan officiated at the Nov. 9 graveside service at Mt. Sinai Cemetery in Phoenix, Ariz. Sinai Mortuary of Arizona made the arrangements.

She was born Anneliese Bloch on Sept. 26, 1917, in Breslau, Germany to Paul and Elfriede Bloch.

Her parents and other family members perished in the Holocaust.

Anne fled Nazi rule in 1939 and lived in England and Scotland throughout WW II.

She joined the US Army in England and was sent to Germany as an interpreter.

In Germany, she also worked as a chemist specializing in secret ink and writing for the Civil Censorship Division in Offenbach.

Anne immigrated to the US in 1947 and reunited with her hometown friend Henry Newman, who fled Germany to live in India prior to coming to the US.

They married in 1947 in New York and moved to Denver in 1953.

Henry passed away in 1998, and Anne moved to the Phoenix area in 2006.

Anne Newman is survived by her daughters Judy Kay Frieder (Stu Turgel) of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Debora Petersen of Knoxville, Tenn., and son Daniel Newman of Denver; and grandsons Jeremy Petersen of Washington, DC, and Benjamin Petersen of Knoxville, Tenn.
