Artist and longtime art professor Dr. Andrew Svedlow passed away November 24, 2021. Rabbi Steven Foster officiated at the memorial service, November 28, 2021 at Riverfront Park. He was 65.
Dr. Svedlow was a prolific and accomplished artist. His work was shown in more than 40 exhibitions around the world. For the past decade Dr. Svedlow was instrumental in leadership at the Artworks Center for Contemporary Art in Loveland.
For the past 16 years, Dr. Svedlow was at the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley as a professor and administrator. He was the former dean of the College of Performing and Visual Arts, and taught art education, art history, arts administration and studio art.
Dr. Svedlow previously taught at Penn State University, University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth, University of Kansas, NYU, University of Southern Mississippi, University of New Hampshire and New Hampshire Institute of Art.
Born in Stamford, Conn., on December 9, 1955, Dr. Svedlow studied fine arts at George Washington University. He earned an MA in museum education at the Bank Street College of Education in 1982, and a PhD in philosophy in 1985 at Penn State.
Dr. Svedlow’s family called him “A dignified, intelligent, kind, funny and creative man.”
“Andrew’s life was focused on family, education, culture, art and a love of nature,” his family said. “His passion for knowledge, his gentle demeanor and kindness left a lasting impact on friends, family and students.”
“Andrew was a brilliant flame that sparked immense joy in all who knew him,” the family added.
Dr. Svedlow is mourned by Lisa Wolff.
He is survived by children Aaron (Stephanie), David (Claire), Hannah, Zoe and Summer; and five grandchildren.
