Rabbi Herbert Rose

Rabbi Herbert RoseRabbi Herbert Rose, spiritual leader of Har HaShem in Boulder from 1983 to 1993, passed away Nov. 27, 2013, in Sarasota, Fla. He was 84. Services were held Dec. 1 at Temple Emanuel in Sarasota. Interment followed at Beth Sholom Cemetery.

Rose was born Nov. 13, 1929, in New York to a family of rabbis stretching back many generations in the US and Europe.

He graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Cincinnati in 1950.

Ordained at HUC-JIR in 1955 with high honors and the degree of master of Hebrew letters, he later earned his doctorate.

The day after his ordination, Rose married Esther Burgin of Cincinnati and entered the US Air Force as a chaplain. He served for two years before being honorably discharged.

Rose became the assistant to Rabbi Abba Silver in Cleveland and eventually accepted pulpits in the New York area.

In the late 1960s he founded and was the first chair of the Long Island Committee for Soviet Jewry, advocating the free expression of religion for Russian Jews and relaxed emigration policies.

Rose was the executive vice president of the New York Board of Rabbis and president of the Long Island Assn. of Reform Rabbis.

In 1983, Rabbi Rose became the spiritual leader of Har HaShem, Boulder’s Reform synagogue.

He was elected president of the Rocky Mountain Rabbinical Council during his tenure.

Upon his retirement in 1993, Har HaShem honored him as “a true scholar, teacher of Torah and ardent supporter of Israel.”

Rabbi and Mrs. Rose retired to Florida in 2001.

Rabbi Rose is survived by his wife Esther; children Judah (Lisa) Ben Zion and Eve (Rod); and grandchildren Maayan, Samuel and Arava.
