Anita Lebowitz Stieglitz, former executive director of Temple Emanuel and well-known Jewish educator, passed away April 5, 2012, in Denver. Rabbi Marc Gitler and Cantor Joel Lichterman officiated at the April 5 service at Rose Hill Cemetery. Feldman Mortuary made the arrangements.
Anita couldnt get through the grocery store without children under five hugging her, the family said. The employees of the store always wanted to know if she was famous. She always answered, To anyone under the age of five.
Anita Lebowitz was born May 4, 1949, in Décín, Czechoslovakia. She lived in Podmokly, Czechoslovakia; Vienna, Austria; Brooklyn and Jerusalem before moving to Denver in 1984.
A graduate of James Madison High School, she earned her BA from Brooklyn College and two MAs from New York University.
She married Col. Michael Stieglitz in May of 1979. Mr. Stieglitz passed away in 1995.

Public relations director and fundraiser for the United Jewish Appeal from 1977-1982, Mrs. Stieglitz was the executive director of Temple Emanuel from 1985-1989. She also coordinated the first West Side Reunion.
She taught various subjects and music at several Jewish institutions including Denver Jewish Day School; Herzl (choir master); Temple Emanuel, BMH-BJ preschool and DAT (Jewish music); and Rodef Shalom (religious studies).
An author, Mrs. Stieglitz wrote The Jews of Uzhgorod, Czechoslovakia and numerous biographies.
In 2009, she received the Grinspoon-Steinhardt Award for Excellence in Jewish Education from CAJE.
Mrs. Steiglitz is survived by her sons Daniel of Denver and Avi (Devorah) Stieglitz of Jerusalem; grandson Elisha; and sister Susan (Paul) Fishman of Denver.
