Buckley to speak at JFS luncheon May 11

The sixth annual JFS executive luncheon and fundraiser, featuring political novelist Christopher Buckley, is Tuesday, May 11, noon, at the Donald R. Seawell Grand Ballroom at the DCPA.

All proceeds from the event will help support local community programs offered through JFS in its four key areas: mental health counseling, senior services, disability and employment services, and family safety net services.

Buckley, winner of the Thurber Prize for American Humor, has been hailed by audiences for his incisive, funny and witty presentations.

Miriam Hoffman speaks at HEA Shoah event April 13

“Hear Our Voices,” the 13th annual HEA Shoah commemoration, will be held Tuesday, April 13, 7 p.m., at the synagogue.

Miriam Hoffman will be this year’s featured speaker.

Hoffman, who was born in Greece around 1935, will retell her family’s story of loss and survival during the Italian fascist and Nazi occupations of Greece.

The commemoration will include the annual candlelighting ceremony honoring those who survived and those who lost their lives during the Holocaust.

Kirkel to speak April 10  at BMH-BJ Remembrance

BMH-BJ’s Holocaust remembrance Shabbat service will be Saturday, April 10, 9 a.m. The service includes storyteller Rosalyn Kirkel, speaking at 11 a.m., and Holocaust remembrance prayers.

“Shtetele Belz: Music Saved His Life,” the Holocaust survival story of Shmuel Gogol, will be told by Kirkel. It was at the march of remembrance and hope mission in Poland, where she was invited to tell her life’s story, that Kirkel was touched by Gogol’s story, as related by the Israeli guide.

Decade at TJE: Rabbi Wasserman is all about outreach

WHEN Ahron Yisroel Wasserman was a pupil at Hillel Academy of Denver, he knew he enjoyed organizing youth groups and Shabbos groups.

Little did he know that he would ultimately use his talents to reach out to Jews in his hometown whose lifestyles were very different from his own.

Ahron Wasserman was born 38 years ago, the youngest child of Rabbi Isaac and Reva Wasserman. He was the only one of the Wassermans’  four children to be born in Denver after they moved here to start Yeshiva Toras Chaim, along with Rabbi Israel and Leah Kagan.

On flight, NFTYites raise money for Haiti

On a typical flight from Denver to St. Louis, passengers barely have enough time to digest the Wall Street Journal or finish perusing the latest copy of Vanity Fair.

Add the excited chatter of 61 Colorado youths traveling to NFTY’s regional winter chavurah, and time itself accelerates out of existence.

But on Jan. 15, NFTYites from Temples Sinai and Emanuel put aside frivolity to focus on victims of the catastrophic earthquake that leveled Haiti a mere three days earlier.

By the time they landed in St. Louis, they had raised hundreds of dollars for Haitian relief — from every passenger on that plane.
