Odd (wo)man out

I’m not going to lie: I was a little apprehensive about going to JEWISHcolorado’s Men’s Event. Me, a woman, at the largest gathering of Jewish men west of the Mississippi? But from the moment I walked into the hangar at Wings Over the Rockies, I knew it was going to be a fun night.

My first thought: so this is what it must be like for a man to walk into the Great Challah Bake. Or Choices. I’m in the secret club! There’s a kick to being the odd woman out — one of the 36 as Jco interim CEO Marsha Hurwitz referred to the women in the audience.

Gender aside, this was an event well worth attending. It was wonderful hearing our governor and two US senators express their unwavering support of Israel.

There were other great speakers — and I’m not even remembering them all: Dr. Herzl Melmed, who lived in Israel during the Six Day War; Ramat Hanegev Mayor Eran Doron, proudly touting his region, Jco’s partner in Israel; Israel’s consul general in Los Angeles Sam Grundwerg, who chose to focus primarily on what he called the overflowing cup of Israel’s success.

On a more local level, I loved putting faces to names of subscribers, seeing colleagues in the Jewish community, as well as meeting new people.

I’ll happily be one of the 36 again — so please, Mr. Mizel, keep those non-meat options on the menu for this vegetarian, and I apologize in advance for bringing the “healthy” quotient to this party of everything from brisket to spare ribs.

And men — which of you will brave being the odd one out at Choices?
