Obituaries

Frieda Reinstein

Frieda Reinstein, a Holocaust survivor, passed away Dec. 8, 2008, in St. Louis, Mo. The funeral was held Dec. 11 in St. Louis at Berger Memorial Chapel, which made the arrangements.

Mrs. Reinstein was married to the late Alex F. Reinstein, also a Holocaust survivor.

She is survived by her children Israel Barry (Debra Feldman) Rein, Solomon (the late Randee) Rein and Jacob B. Rein; grandchildren Gabrielle and Nicole Rein, Michael A. Rein, Melissa and Alexander Rein; niece Sue (Sol) Awend and cousin Lisa (Joe) Reinstein.

Contributions may be made to the Tpheris Israel-Chevra Kadisha Congregation, 14550 Ladue Rd., Chesterfield, MO 63017; or St. Louis Holocaust Learning Center and Museum, 12 Millstone Campus Dr., St. Louis, MO 63146.

 

Dr. Philip Goldhammer

Dr. Philip Goldhammer

Dr. Philip Goldhammer, raised in Denver and a graduate of the CU Health Sciences Center, passed away Dec. 11, 2008, in Gig Harbor, Wash. after a long battle with cancer. He was 65.

Services were held Dec. 14 at the Gan Shalom Cemetery in Seattle.

“Philip was an exceptionally loving husband, a kind and giving father, a humorous friend and a compassionate physician,” the family said.

Dr. Goldhammer is survived by his wife Barbara; children Eric and Amy Beth; and siblings JoAnn (Dr. Howard) Kerstein and Nelson Goldhammer.

Contributions may be made to the Seattle Care Alliance or the Smithsonian Institute.

Martin Small

Martin Small

Martin Small, who gave voice to the agony of the Holocaust in his artwork, poems and the memoir Remember Us, passed away Nov. 29, 2008. He was 91.

Rabbi Marc Soloway of Bonai Shalom officiated at the Nov. 30 service held at Har HaShem in Boulder. Interment followed at Crist Mountain View Memorial Park. Crist Mortuary made the arrangements.

Diagnosed with pancreatic cancer earlier this year, Mr. Small devoted all his strength to completing Remember Us, which was co-authored by Vic Shayne.

All the proceeds from the memoir were used to purchase a Torah for Bonai Shalom.

Mordechai Schmulevicz was born in 1916 in Molczadz, Poland.

Sidney Cohn

Sidney Cohn

Sidney Cohn, a veteran of WW II, passed away Dec. 3, 2008, in Denver. Rabbi Steven Kaye officiated at the graveside service at Fort Logan National Cemetery. Feldman Mortuary made the arrangements.

“He was a wonderfully gentle man with a smile on his face at all times,” the family said. “He was a happy person who strove to make others happy too.”

Mr. Cohn was born Dec. 20, 1917, in Chicago, Ill. He graduated high school and played baseball and basketball at college.

Dr. Louis Kurland

Dr. Louis Richard Kurland of Hollywood, Fla., formerly of Denver, passed away Nov. 14, 2008, after succumbing to a brain tumor. He was 68.

The service was held Nov. 16 at the Beth David Memorial Chapel in Hollywood. Interment followed at Temple Beth El Memorial Gardens.

Dr. Kurland was born in Denver to the late Dr. Stanley and Ruth Kurland.

He earned his BS and medical degree from CU and trained as an ophthalmologist at George Washington University and the Washington Hospital Center in DC.
