IJN takes home six Rockower Awards for excellence in Jewish journalism

The Intermountain Jewish News staff won six Simon Rockower Awards for Excellence in Jewish Journalism at the annual conference of the American Jewish Press Association, June 14-16, in Phoenix.

Rabbi Hillel Goldberg, IJN executive editor, represented the IJN at the conference, which examines best practices in the industry and the interaction of electronic and print media.

The immigration crisis in Arizona was also addressed.

The highlight of the conference is the annual banquet, at which the awards are presented.

The awards are based on a blind evaluation by a juried panel of professional journalists and of professors of journalism.

Secular-religious tensions in Israel reach boiling point

Secular-religious tensions in Israel reach boiling point

JERUSALEM — The showdown between the Supreme Court and the parents of students at a haredi Orthodox school found guilty of discriminatory practices against Sephardic girls has brought already strained secular-religious relations in Israel to a fever pitch.

A remark by Supreme Court Justice Edmond Levy that the court’s decisions are not subject to rabbinical approval went straight to the heart of the matter, with irate haredi demonstrators declaring that if they had to choose between the court and their rabbis, the rabbis always would come first.

Cheyenne: Mt. Sinai’s 100th anniversary

Mt. Sinai, the oldest synagogue in Cheyenne, Wyo., will celebrate its centennial the weekend of June 25-27.

At the turn of the century, Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe escaped religious persecution and poverty and came to Wyoming, perceived as a haven for freedom and success.

Mt. Sinai was founded as an Orthodox synagogue in 1910.

The weekend will begin with a Friday night Shabbat service and oneg on June 25.

Kyrgyzstan Jews pitching in to help region

MOSCOW — The Jewish community of Bishkek is helping to deliver humanitarian aid to the south of Kyrgyzstan for those who are caught up in the ethnic rioting taking place there.

“We have raised money to buy 30 sacks of flour and 15 sacks of rice,” the head of the Bishkek Jewish community, Boris Shapiro, told JTA this week.

“The assembly of the Peoples of Kyrgyzstan, in which our community takes part, is sending a truck with these and other sacks of food to the Fergana Valley. This aid is meant not only for Jews but for all the people suffering there.”

Ethnic rioting in the country’s south between ethnic Kyrgyz and Uzbeks has led to the death of at least 170 people and 1,800 injuries, according to reports, though the death toll could be much higher. In addition, at least 100,000 people have been displaced.

US, Israel put aside differences to work on Iran, peace talks and flotilla probe

WASHINGTON — The relationship between the Obama administration, the Netanyahu government and the pro-Israel community is ensconced on all fronts in “agree, for now” mode.

On isolating Iran, everyone agrees — and is pleased — that the new set of UN sanctions will make it easier for the US to enhance its own unilateral sanctions.

Differences are looming, however, on whether the US sanctions should carve out exemptions for countries that helped push through the UN sanctions.

On peace talks, the consensus is to move from US-brokered proximity talks between the Israelis and the Palestinians to direct talks.

That was the message Obama administration officials and US Jewish organizational leaders made forcefully last week to PA President Mahmoud Abbas during his Washington visit, and it is one that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Obama likely will make the centerpiece of their summit later this month.
