Frances Weisgrau

Frances Weisgrau passed away July 10, 2016, in Montrose, Colo., where she had lived for the past six months. She was 93. Rabbi Leah Berkowitz officiated at the July 14 service at McHoul Funeral Home in Fishkill, NY. Interment followed at Mount Zion Cemetery in Maspeth, with Rabbi Steven Ziskind officiating.

“Frances was a good mother to her three daughters and a wise and funny matriarch to her extended family,” her loved ones said. “And she was fiercely independent.”

Frances Signer was born in 1922 in Worcester, Mass.

A resident of the Bronx for most of her adult life, she graduated high school and took a number of college courses.

Mrs. Weisgrau loved to read and enjoyed conversational Hebrew, Spanish and Yiddish, word games, square dancing, camping and traveling.

In recent years she was very active in political classes, in addition to singing and acting in performances.

“She was known for her quick wit and timing when telling jokes, especially in Yiddish,” the family said.

Mrs. Weisgrau is survived by her daughters Roxanne (Alan) Morris, Tsivya (Barry) Frieder and Gloria (Steven) Goverman; grandchildren Shoshanah Kriheli, Aaron Larson, David Larson, Hannah Goverman, Noah Goverman, Jonah Goverman, Emma Goverman, Kristin Zurmuhlin, Matthew Morris and Genevieve Morris; and great-grandchildren Ruchel Meira Kriheli, Hadassah Rina Kriheli, Shmuel Dove Kriheli, Yitzak Yonaton Kriheli, Miriam Malka Kriheli, Gavriel Larson and Ahuva Larson.

Her husband Bernard Weisgrau predeceased her.
