Jewish Democrats: Obama ‘flawless’ on Israel

Jewish Democrats: Obama ‘flawless’ on Israel

During the past year, Barack Obama has been criticized in certain Jewish circles for waffling on his commitment to Israel and an undivided Jerusalem.

Last Tuesday, Aug. 26, Democratic Jewish US senators and members of Congress proclaimed their unqualified and undivided commitment to Obama at the DNC.

“Barack Obama has been a staunch and unflinching supporter of Israel” since he first entered Congress in 2002, said New York Sen. Charles Schumer, who opened the National Jewish Democratic Council press conference.

The Democratic presidential nominee’s position on the Middle East, Schumer added, “is flawless.”

Clinton’s night: A Hollywood blockbuster in search of an Oscar

Last Wednesday night, the Democratic National Convention raced toward its conclusion like a Hollywood blockbuster in search of an Oscar.

The almighty convention: More than a state fair and Purim rolled into one — a desire for change

The almighty convention: More than a state fair and Purim rolled into one — a desire for change

The ultimate challenge at a political convention is to determine exactly what is real and what is not.

The big party conventions are, after all, the state fairs, the Purims, the amusement park parties, the jamborees, of the political process — and a big share of the political process is, as all of us know, image, spin, even illusion.

To the degree that politics is perception — a product as slickly packaged and adroitly promoted as Coca-Cola, Madonna or Vegas vacations — no greater monument to that art exists than the almighty convention.

That became clear the moment any visitor entered the Pepsi Center during this week’s Democratic National Convention in Denver.

A trek to — and into —the Pepsi Center during its glory: an old fashioned surprise

At 11:45 a.m. on Monday, I started down the long and winding road to the Democratic National Convention at the Pepsi Center.

I walked to the RTD shuttle on Lincoln, about a 10-minute trek from the IJN. Nearby in Civic Center Park, I noticed various encampments and heard voices blaring through microphones.

Allowing myself a two-hour window of opportunity — find the Pepsi Center, investigate a bit, return to the office — I focused on the task at hand. The protesters would have to wait.

I accelerated my pace, causing the press credentials around my neck to flap like birds in the humid air, until I arrived at the shuttle stop.
