Obama wins: "Change has come"

Obama wins:

After a long and sometimes bitter struggle, Obama has emerged the clear victor in his campaign against John McCain for president of the United States. For his supporters, over 70,000 of whom packed Chicago's Grant Park to celebrate, it was an emotional and triumphant night that marked a clear end to the Bush years.

Obama won every battleground state - including Colorado - some of which had not voted for a Democrat candidate since the 1960s.

UPDATED: Jewish vote: Obama 78%-22%

UPDATED: Jewish vote: Obama 78%-22%

WASHINGTON – For some Jewish voters, the strangeness of Barack Obama was like a recurring dream: unsettling and then settling in, and then, suddenly, revelatory.

Ari Wallach described breaking through to elderly Jews in Florida who had resisted voting for the son of the man from Kenya, the tall black man with the middle name “Hussein.”

“It wasn’t only his policy on Israel and Iran, on health care,” said Wallach, whose Jewsvote.org led the “Great Shlep,” an effort to prod young adults to get their Jewish grandparents in Florida to vote for Obama.

“His biography feels so Jewish, it feels like an Ellis Island archetype. People felt more comfortable when I talked about where he came from, it resonated so deeply.”

Where do the candidates stand on the issues? A complete guide

Where do the candidates stand on the issues? A complete guide

From the Middle East to domestic affairs, a look at where Senator Barack Obama and Republican John McCain stand on issues of Jewish concern.

DOMESTIC POLICY

ABORTION

Abortion is an area of sharp disagreement between the two candidates. Obama said during the Oct. 15 presidential debate that he believes Roe v. Wade was “rightly decided,” although “good people on both sides can disagree.” He added that “women in consultation with their families, their doctors, their religious advisers are in the best position to make this decision,” and that the Constitution “has a right to privacy in it that shouldn't be subject to state referendum, anymore than our First Amendment rights are subject to state referendum.”

At the same debate, McCain called Roe v. Wade “a bad decision” and said that decisions on abortion should “rest in the hands of the states. McCain says on his Web site that the ruling should be overturned. McCain has backed a ban on abortion except in cases of rape, incest or threat to the life of the mother, and he said at a presidential forum in August that his administration will have “pro-life policies.”

Naming the advisers: Who has the ear of McCain?

Naming the advisers: Who has the ear of McCain?

WASHINGTON — When the question of recognizing Israel landed on President Harry Truman’s desk in May, 1948, he had to balance the advice of his old friend, Clark Clifford, against the general he deeply admired, George Marshall.

In the end Truman went with his friend, recognizing the new Jewish state.

As a longtime veteran of Washington, John McCain has accumulated his own list of confidants.

During the lead up to the 2000 presidential primaries, McCain was quoted as saying that he would turn to Brzezinski for advice.

This time around, he voiced admiration for two veterans of the Bush administration, Brent Scowcroft and James Baker, who are associated with the realist camp that advocated for pressure on Israel.
